Privacy and Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a fundamental responsibility for all Murrumbidgee LHD Volunteers. As a volunteer, you may have access to sensitive information about patients, clients, staff, or fellow volunteers, and it is essential that this information is treated with the utmost respect and discretion. Confidentiality extends to all forms of personal information, such as health conditions, legal issues, family matters, disabilities, and other private details - and must never be shared, discussed, or used without explicit permission, except where legally required. Even in those rare cases, such matters must only be disclosed after consulting with your Volunteer Co-ordinator. Maintaining confidentiality is not just a matter of courtesy, but a legal and ethical obligation that protects the dignity, privacy, and safety of every individual within the hospital community.

Breaches of confidentiality are taken extremely seriously by Murrumbidgee LHD. Any misuse, careless handling, or inappropriate sharing of information can cause harm to individuals, compromise trust, and in some cases directly impact health and safety. Volunteers are expected to exercise sound judgement, ensure discussions take place in private settings, and always respect the personal nature of information shared with them. Failure to comply with the NSW Health Code of Conduct and/or Murrumbidgee LHD’s confidentiality policies can result in disciplinary action, dismissal, and loss of insurance coverage. Protecting confidentiality is therefore both a professional responsibility and a condition of serving as a valued volunteer within the hospital.

By signing below, I acknowledge that I have read, understood, and agree to uphold the confidentiality requirements outlined above.
